Korean Basil (깻잎), Perilla

  • Korean Basil or Perilla (Kkaennip 깻잎) is native to Asia and part of the mint family. It is an aromatic herb very much like basil, but in Korean cuisine, it's often used like a vegetable or as a wrap for other foods. Korean Basil can be eaten fresh, pickled or cooked.

Korean Basil is related to Japanese Shiso and has a similar minty/anise/basil/clove flavor, but is milder overall. Compared to Shiso, Korean Basil is larger, flatter, has a less serrated edge, and is sometimes purple on the underside.

  • Korean basil leaves are larger than Japanese Shiso, typically around 3–4.5 in (7–12 cm) long and 2–3 in (5–8 cm) wide.

  • Done for the season!
